Another outburst from Barton

John Williams - Wednesday 10.10.07, 13:18pm

Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton has put himself in the spotlight once again, claiming that the players chosen to represent the England team, get carried away by the prospect of playing for their country.

The controversial player who has ruffled feathers with his outspoken comments and actions at previous club Manchester City, has yet to play for Newcastle after an injury sustained in pre season. His comments come amid the ongoing ”club versus country” drama surrounding teammate and England striker Michael Owen.

Barton conceded that if “England comes then so be it, but I’ve played for them once and that will do for me”. He also went on to say that he was more interested in domestic honours than playing for his country.

This latest outburst will surely have ended any slim chance that Barton may have had of an England recall. His only game was in last February’s defeat by Spain, at Old Trafford.

Barton shone when he was at City but I think he would look pretty average compared to Sven’s recent signings had he not left for Newcastle. Would he have even got in the team under Sven??

He can be a useful player but his huge ego probably means we’ll never see him at his best playing for England. not when he’s alienating everyone with his comments (even though they may be true. some things are best left unsaid publically!)
