Arsenal almost signed Beckham

John Williams - Monday 14.01.08, 16:09pm

beckham and wengerArsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed that he tried to sign David Beckham from Real Madrid in 2004.  Beckham, who made the move to Madrid from Manchester United in 2003, was struggling during his first season in Spain when Wenger made the approach through the players agent.

Wenger says “David almost came to Arsenal a couple of years ago, when things did not go to well during his first season with Real”.

Beckham decided to stay at Madrid and went on to help them win the La Liga title in the 2006/7 season.

This follows Wenger’s further revelation that he wanted to take former Arsenal striker Nicolas Anelka  back to Highbury after losing Thierry Henry to Barcelona. He says that he made enquiries but the French player was not ready to move from Bolton at the time. Anelka joined rival London club Chelsea on Friday and made his debut from the substitutes bench on Saturday.
