Arsenal Moving Backwards

John Williams - Monday 17.03.08, 15:51pm

Arsenal captain William Gallas has spoken about why Arsenal could destroy AC Milan in the Champions league and yet drop nine of a possible twelve available points in their recent games in the Premiership.

He says ‘It was in the head. It is human nature after a big game in Europe, it is difficult to find the same motivation for the following game.’

Just what motivation Arsenal need with their best chance of winning the Premiership in several years is beyond me. The Gunners were sitting pretty a few weeks back, coping with the pressure and looking like worthy runaway champions.

But how it has all changed. Manchester United’s dogged determination against a Derby County team with restored pride after their thrashing at Chelsea, ground out a win that took them to the top of the table on Saturday. Chelsea too went about their business at Sunderland and finished with three points. While Arsenal looked desperate at times at home to Middlesbrough, scoring an equaliser in the dying minutes of the game., earning another solitary point.

This weekends game against Chelsea will surely reignite the passion in the Gunners young squad, when only a win for either team will be good enough. Chelsea could already be on equal points with Arsenal by that stage, if they were to win their game in hand at Tottenham in midweek.

For the football fans it has turned out to be an incredible finish to the season, a three horse race for the first time in years, and four if you don’t dismiss Liverpool coming into the final furlong in full flourish.

Gallas admits that Arsenal must win ALL of their remaining games to have a chance of lifting the title. On that one he is right. But then again United , Chelsea and Liverpool will be saying exactly the same about their own chances.
