Barcelona brushed aside Athletic Bilbao in last night’s Copa del Rey final, running out 4-1 winners to claim their first trophy of the season, and starting a fortnight in which they could pull off a unique treble, never achieved before in Spain.
Underdogs Bilbao looked likely to upset the form book when they had the first shot on goal, resulting in a fine save from Valdes, with Toquero scoring from a free header at the far post from the resulting corner kick after just 9 minutes. Their splendid counter attack game continued to cause the Barcelona defence problems throughout the first half.
While Barcelona’s clever passing game failed to find a way past some excellent defending, Yaya Toure’s dribble through midfield appeared to catch the defenders unaware and his shot slipped inside the near post, when seemingly covered by the goalkeeper.
Barcelona dominated the second half with Messi, Bojan and an excellent free kick from Xavi seperating the teams. The win is the start of a two week period in which Barcelona will be hoping to pull off the treble.
They need one point to secure the La Liga title and face Manchester United in the Champions League final in Rome for the final assault.
