Barcelona ace and best player in Europe, Lionel Messi, has been taken to task by Rangers manager Alex McLeish, after branding the Ibrox teams tactics as “Anti Football.”
Having watched the Champions league game this week, i have to agree with Messi. Barcelona’s “sexy football” and clever passing game allowed the Catalan team to dominate possession, and the gulf in class was often embarrassing to witness.
Rangers brute force and sheer determination was enough to hold Barcelona at bay, and as the game wore on the chances of Barca scoring looked less and less. Clever one two’s around the box are exciting when they come off, but when they didnt, ten times on the trot, Barca didn’t appear to have any other ideas.
With around twenty minutes left to play, Barcelona sensed that nothing less than victory would suffice. They pushed forward in such numbers, that the defence that had easily stifled Rangers one man attack, suddenly appeared full of holes allowing the Scottish team to counter attack. From that point on, Rangers, sensing that they had a real chance, were the only team likely to score. Crashing the ball into the Barca goalmouth, time and again, with such venom, knowing that a touch from either team might be enough to deflect the ball goal-ward.
And so it ended. A game that sexy football should have won. And although the scoreline may read nil nil, the truth is it was a victory for Anti Football.
