Beckham left out of England team

John Williams - Wednesday 21.11.07, 11:57am

According to most of the reports today, It seems that England Coach, Steve McClaren is likely to leave Beckham on the bench for tonight’s crucial qualifier against Croatia.  This move has received divided opinion among reporters and fans alike.

I am a big fan of Beckham, his final few months at Real Madrid, when he was not injured, were inspirational and his influence on the pitch lifted the whole team. I was also pleased that McClaren was big enough to bring Beckham back into the England squad on pure merit.

I am with the England coach on this one though. Beckham hasn’t played much competitive football this season and his lack of pace means that he spends most of the time in the wrong half of the pitch, compromising the attacking instincts of Micah Richards. The inclusion of SWP as Beckhams replacement, gives a much better balance to the team.

For me it is the best option, it is an attacking option moreover, and I like that. The last thing I want to see is England relying on the long ball from the right back position on to Peter Crouch’s head. England surely are a better footballing side than that, and Crouch is a much better player than that.

Anyway if all fails we can always bring Becks off the bench and revert to our normal game!
