Bolton manager Gary Megson showed where his teams priorities lie, by leaving out seven first team regulars for the visit to Sporting Lisbon. Clearly he feels Premiership survival is more important to the club than the progressing to the last eight of the UEFA cup.
The Bolton team worked hard, but needed a goal to progress, and as the game wore on they left themselves exposed, with Sporting eventually scoring the crucial goal.
Neither team had much to offer up front, frustratingly so for Bolton who pushed the Portugese back in the final part of the game, but could not produce the necessary goal.
That leaves Rangers as the only British representative left in the competition. Their two goal advantage going into the game was enough to see then through, despite losing 1-0 on the night to Werder Bremen in a game dominated by the German team.
