Bristol Rovers are the first team to go through to the FA Cup quarter finals, after beating Southampton this afternoon.
Birthday boy Ricky Lambert claimed the goal, an 84th minute free kick that deflected off Saints player Jermaine Wright past his goalkeeper into the net. Rovers were the better side and Lambert was unlucky to have a headed “goal” ruled out for a push, and narrowly missing on another occasion.
The first half was pretty awful, but it picked up a little during the second, with Southampton’s best effort being Jason Eull’s volley from the edge of the area that was well saved by Rovers keeper Steve Phillips.
Goalscorer Lambert said after the game:
“I can’t believe we’re in the quarter-finals, we’re ecstatic. Too right we deserved to win, we are just made up. It means everything to us.”
