Already in his short reign as England football coach, Fabio Capello has achievedĀ a record breaking four wins from four games in the World Cup qualifying round.
Last nights 3-1 win away to Belarus leaves England with maximum points in their group, an achievement only matched by 2008 Euro Cup winners Spain. An enviable position for sure, but certainly not job done. England must not be allowed to rest on their laurels as they have done in previous tournaments, leaving qualification down to mathematics in the last game.
Capello appears to be making some progress with this so called ‘golden age’ of millionaire footballers and the respect of the group for the coach is becoming evident. For the first time since the departure of former England managers Steve McLaren and Sven Goran Eriksson, the public have had some insight into the how the England camp was being run prior to the arrival of Capello.
Rio Ferdinand described the England camp as a ‘circus’ where it seems that the players had no commitment to the team and were more interested in themselves. Frankly that is exactly how it looked on the pitch too and the revelations come as no real surprise.
There is no doubt that Capello has gradually changed things in the England camp, he demands respect and the players have responded. He is still learning about the England players but is not afraid to make decisions that need to made.
In last nights game England fans were rewarded with a coming of age display from Wayne Rooney, the most gifted of the players available for the England team. In his position just behind Emile Heskey, who worked tirelessly, Rooney was able to produceĀ an excellent display and score two great goals, adding to Steve Gerrard’s 30 yard corker after eleven minutes.
There is a six month break now before England take on Ukraine in the next world cup qualifier, although friendlies against Germany, Spain and Slovakia are arranged.
And so it is back to the Premier League fixture list for the coming weekend, a welcome return to club football for most of us, although the international break is, I find, much more interesting when your team is winning!
