Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has been arrested and charged by the police with common assault, following an incident on Tuesday morning.

The player was involved in an altercation while on his way to the Liverpool training ground. A witness had called the police after seeing two men arguing in the street, they identified one of the men as being Carragher.

Carragher was arrested after the other man lodged a complaint against him, he attended the police station with his solicitor and accepted a caution for common assault.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: “We can confirm that a 30-year-old man from the Blundellsands area received a police caution for common assault in relation to an incident on Liverpool Road, Crosby, on Tuesday February 26.”
