Carragher worried by Liverpool “bad spell”

John Williams - Monday 18.02.08, 12:39pm

jamie CarragherAt the start of the season Jose Mourinho, then Chelsea manger suggested that the pressure would not be on Chelsea, but on their big spending rivals during the summer, Manchester United and Liverpool.

Seven months later and with Mourinho’s presence a fading memory, United have lived with the pressure, second in the Premiership and soundly beating Arsenal in their FA cup game at the weekend.

But what of Liverpool. The pressure has come from all quarters, on and off the field, and the team that I thought would at last give Liverpool a shout at the title is suddenly in total disarray. Having lost to Barnsley in the last minute of a game that they should have wrapped up much earlier, Liverpool now face Italian Serie A leaders Inter Milan in the Champions League, on Tuesday. Their only realistic chance of winning silverware this season, comes at a time when the Reds are struggling to find some consistency in their game.

Jamie Carragher has long been a favourite, not just of the Kop but by football fans across the land. He is an honest, passionate player that anyone would want in their team. The backbone of the Liverpool defence over the past god knows how many seasons. At 30 years old the chances of winning a Premiership title are fading yet again and the player has spoken out about the clubs current form.

“I wouldn’t call it a bad spell-its been longer. We realise we are not playing well enough. Its not a matter of putting your finger on one reason.” said Carragher, adding , honestly “Its simply that we have not been good enough.”

Eight points from the last seven league games has allowed deadly rivals Everton to leapfrog the Anfield club into fourth place, something you sense means more than getting knocked out of the cup to the Liverpool faithful. But all eyes are on the Champions League now , as Carragher admits “Its the only thing we have left that we can win.”
