So it’s a good time to give you a heads up about a new website that is about to launch which will bring you a scores and results service covering all of the major British and European leagues and tournaments, including the Premier League, English Football League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, and the Champions League.

As well as following favourite domestic clubs in the Premier League and Championship, I also follow the trials and tribulations of my non-league hometown team, formerly Gravesend & Northfleet now known as Ebbsfleet, as well as favourite European teams of which I have personal favourites in each of the top European leagues.

These passive allegiances stem from my childhood when the only European football to be shown on British television was on Wednesday nights on the sadly missed Sportsnight programme.  My memories are full of exciting  European football matches when I was allowed to stay up way past my bedtime to watch great teams with world class players and cool looking football kits to match.

Johan Cruyff and Ajax, Franz Beckenbauer and Bayern Munich and wonderful sounding teams like Dukla Prague, Panathinaikos and Borussia Monchengladbach!

I recall Leeds United losing 1-0 in a ill-tempered game to AC Milan in the 1973 Cup Winners Cup final just four days after losing 1-0 to Sunderland in the FA Cup final; Nottm Forest beating the Swedish part-timeers Malmo in 1979 with a Trevor Francis header and retaining the European Cup by beating Hamburg in 1980; and West Ham losing to Anderlecht of Belgium in the 1976 Cup Winners Cup.

I remember the glory days of Saint Etienne in the French League and how Real Madrid played in a similar all-white kit to Leeds United (only to recently read that Don Revie changed the home kit to mimic the Spanish giants on becoming manager of Leeds United in 1961!).

I also have a passive favouritism for teams with cool kits, choosing Celtic over Rangers not for any political or religious reasons but because I thought green and whites hoops looked cooler than a regular blue shirt.  I also preferred the black & blue stripes of Inter Milan to the red & black stripes of AC Milan.
So even before European football was made available on satellite tv, my interest in football spread further than the English leagues.  The English Premier League is often cited by critics and players alike to currently be the best league in the world.  But I still lookout for scores and results from the Spanish La Liga and Italy’s Serie A.

The Football Scores website will be a great source for all this information and will also include international tournaments, such as the European Championships, international friendly matches, international qualifiers and the World Cup. The website is called FootballScores.com and it launches this month.

Tomorrow night Tottenham Hotspur face their toughest challenge so far in the Champions League when they play Real Madrid at the Bernabeu Stadium.  Harry Redknapp is right when he says Spurs have a great squad, and on their day are capable of beating anyone.  They have already proved me wrong by beating both Inter Milan & AC Milan but this is a different challenge.  It’s not so much the quality of the Real Madrid players, the stadium or the expecting fans in Spain, but the manager.

Jose Mourinho masterminded last seasons’ winners Inter Milan to a surprise victory against Barcelona on route to the final after previously dumping Chelsea out of the competition.  On paper, Inter Milan was underdogs for both matches but Mourinho is one of the best football tacticians and known for his dossiers on opposing teams.

Mourinho will be fully aware of Gareth Bale but unlike Rafa Benitez, I am confident he will cancel out his pace and skill.

I expect Real Madrid to win by one or two goals tomorrow night and will be surprised if Tottenham score.  The return leg at White Hart Lane will decide whether Spurs go through to the semi-finals to meet Barcelona or Shakhtar Donetsk.

The other two English clubs left in the completion go head-to-head at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday as Chelsea take on Manchester United, only weeks after they beat Man Utd with the help of a dubious penalty.

The most any neutral can hope for in the two legs between the 2008 Champions League finalists when Chelsea lost on penalties, is that the games are as exciting as their recent Premier League fixture and they don’t simply cancel each other out.

Chelsea’s best chance of going through to the semi-finals to face Inter Milan or Schalke 04 is to take a lead to the second-leg at Old Trafford next Tuesday.  I believe their best chance is to start with Nicolas Anelka & Didier Drogba, but what a time it would be for Fernando Torres to score his first goal for Chelsea!

In the other two quarter-finals I am confident Barcelona & Inter Milan will win this week and go through to the semi-finals next week, though it might be a squeeze for Inter Milan.

The second-leg games will be played next week on Tuesday 12th & Wednesday 13th April.

Even though Arsenal took a 2-1 lead to the Nou Camp on Tuesday, they knew Barcelona would be difficult to contain for 90+ minutes. But if they could score the pressure would be on Barca to score twice. It was a difficult task without the absurd sending off of Robin Van Persie for taking a shot on goal after the referee had blown his whistle for a marginal offside decision. Whether Van Persie did or didn’t hear the whistle above the noise of the capacity crowd, I don’t believe the referee could have been sure.

Van Persie was sent off in the 56th minute, just after Arsenal had drawn level on the night through a Busquets own goal. At this point, though Barcelona was dominating the possession and the game itself, it was Arsenal who was going through to the quarter-finals. With wave after wave of amazing attacking football, I believed Barcelona were going to win the game even before Van Persie’s dismissal. But the decision was ridiculous and only put added pressure on the ten men of Arsenal who played as courageously as they had two weeks previous at The Emirates. I don’t think many neutrals would disagree that over the course of the two legs, Barcelona were the better team. Furthermore, on these two performances alone, the Spanish champions look unstoppable and could give any team, club or country a run for their money.

While Arsenal are out, Tottenham Hotspur continue to enjoy their Champions League run which has seen them top their group, beat the reigning European Champions Inter Milan and yesterday go through to the quarter-finals after playing out a 0-0 draw against AC Milan. This was a great disciplined performance from a team that are known for their attacking play and defensive weaknesses. To go through by not conceding a goal over two legs certainly surprised me. Harry Redknapp said it was a “fantastic achievement” and would rather not draw Barcelona in the next round but would be happy to play anyone else.

The draw for the Champions League quarter-finals will take place on Friday 18th March. Beforehand Chelsea look favourites to go through against FC Copenhagen next Wednesday at Stamford Bridge following a 2-0 win in Denmark; and Manchester United should beat Marseille at Old Trafford on Tuesday after a 0-0 draw in France. The other two games see Bayern Munich play Inter Milan with a one goal advantage from the first leg and Lyon travel to Real Madrid following a 1-1 draw.

The quarter-finals will be a straight draw, meaning that for the first time in the Champions League this season any English teams left in the competition could face each other. But after being knocked out of last season’s Champions League by Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan, if Chelsea & Real Madrid go through, what’s the chances of Mourinho coming back once again to haunt Roman Abramovich?

Let’s hope Chelsea & Manchester United can join Spurs in the draw and avoid each other in the quarter-finals.

Gattuso, who had twice clashed with Jordan during the match, totally lost it at the final whistle and like an uncontrollable psycho sought out the Tottenham coach once again to plant a headbutt on his victim.

A statement from UEFA read: “The control and disciplinary body ruled that Gattuso had assaulted the Tottenham Hotspur assistant coach Joe Jordan after the match.

“Gattuso, who was also cautioned in the 76th minute of the game, is already suspended for the return leg of the UEFA Champions League tie against Tottenham after receiving three yellow cards.

“Consequently, the four-match suspension applies to the next four UEFA club competition matches for which he would be eligible.”

The Milan captain has three days in which to make an unlikely appeal and has since apologised for his actions saying:

“I lost control. There is no excuse for what I did. I take my responsibilities for that. I was nervous. We were both speaking Scottish, something that I learned when I played in his home city of Glasgow, but I can’t tell you what we said.”

Harry Redknapp’s team have scored four goals from counter attacks this season, at least twice as many as 30 of the other 31 teams who have played in the Champions League this season, and their total of eight shots from counter attacks is also a competition high.

It was how Tottenham disposed of Milan’s city rivals Inter in the group game at White Hart Lane, scoring twice from counter attacks and utilising the pace of Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon. The Spurs central midfield of Modric (14) and Huddlestone (6) sat deep and then released the front four to devastating effect. Similar tactics at the San Siro could bring further success.

Surprisingly it is Aaron Lennon who leads the Champions League table for assists this season with four and Spurs will be further comforted by the fact that Peter Crouch has also had a hand in setting up three more for the North Londoners.

AC Milan would appear to be least comfortable when defending shots from distance, no team has allowed more shots from long range to hit the target than Milan, with the final group stage game against Ajax a case in point. Both of the Dutch side’s goals came from outside the area, along with seven other shots on target.

While Spurs were joint top scorers in the group stage, only one of their eighteen goals was scored from outside the box. Given the striking capabilities from midfield it would not be a surprise if Redknapp orders his players to shoot on sight of goal, regardless of distance.

When it comes to discipline it would appear that no team can match the ill tempered defence of AC Milan. They have conceded 98 fouls a figure only matched by Shaktar Donetsk and have recieved a table topping 17 yellow cards so far in the competition.

That equates to 13 separate AC Milan players picking up bookings during the group stage, however they have yet to have a player sent off in the Champions League.

AC Milan are currently at the top of Serie A and I fancy them to edge an open but low scoring game at San Siro with a score of 2-1.

Lampard almost plays a free role when Chelsea play 4-3-3, making late runs into the penalty box as well as dropping back to start attacks with sweeping passes, sometimes from his own half,  whereas the diamond formation effectively pushes him further forward in a more confined role supporting the two strikers.

When Chelsea bought Nicolas Anelka in the 2008 January Transfer Window from Bolton I was sure it was a replacement for Didier Drogba who had hinted at a move to Italy.  And though Anelka and Drogba have successfully played together over the past few seasons, I still hold the belief they do not compliment each other’s play.  Anelka plays second fiddle whenever Drogba plays the central striker; and though their interplay can be very effective, Chelsea would only play either if they had another world class forward to choose from.

The arrival of Fernando Torres from Liverpool for £50 million, a British record transfer fee, is going to force Chelsea to reconsider playing 4-4-2 as playing Fernando Torres out of position would not strengthen Chelsea; and leaving Didier Drogba out of the team would be a loss.  If Chelsea can switch to a 4-4-2 and Drogba & Torres can become as much an effective partnership as Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Eidur Gudjohnsson when they scored 50 goals in one season, then Chelsea could still be on for the treble this season.

Carlo Ancelotti wanted Torres last summer and apparently the deal could have been made if it wasn’t for Roman Abramovich’s reluctance to spend more of his money on buying world class footballers than booking pop stars for his New Years Eve Party!  But with his signing on the last day of the January Transfer Window, Fernando Torres is now set to make his Chelsea debut at Stamford Bridge against Liverpool; and you can get 22/1 for Fernando Torres to score the first goal and Chelsea to win 2-0.

Abramovich still appears to want the Champions League over a domestic trophy which is apparently why he over ruled the board of directors in appointing  Carlo Ancellotti over Mark Hughes.  Ancelotti has won the Champions League four times, twice as a player and twice as manager, with AC Milan.  And with Torres being legible to play in the forthcoming Champions League games, there was probably no other striker of his quality available, which underlines why Roman Abramovich was willing to hang over a barrel from his short and curlies to meet Liverpool’s £50 million price tag.

Oh, and if we are looking to spice up the game on Sunday as much as possible, let’s not forget it was Liverpool that humiliated Ancelotti’s AC Milan in that amazing Champions League final in Istanbul when they came back from 3-0 down and half-time to win 4-3.

Other betting has Chelsea third favourite to win the Premier League at 13/2 behind Manchester United (8/13) and Arsenal (11/4); or 150/1 to win the FA Cup, Premier League and Champions League.  If Chelsea beat Liverpool on Sunday with signs that Torres and Drogba are as powerful a partnership on the field as they are on paper then expect those prices to begin to fall.

Chelsea are going to struggle in the Premiership without John Terry and Alex for the next couple of months but they will both be fit when the Champions League knockout stages begin in March and with two games to go Chelsea have already booked their place in the second round.  And with Frank Lampard returning from injury too, I still believe Chelsea have the best chance of lifting the Champions League trophy in May, of all four English clubs.

So with two games to go in the first round of this season’s Champions League, which two teams from each group look likely to go through to the knockout stages next year?

FC Twente have two games left against Inter Milan (away) and at home to Spurs.  To finish ahead of either Inter or Tottenham they are going to have to win one of those games and hope that Tottenham & Inter drop points in their other games; possible, but unlikely.

Three teams can still progress from Group B.  Lyon currently lead the group with nine points followed by Schalke 04 on seven and Benfica with six. Lyon and Benfica should both pick up three points when they play Hapoel Te-Aviv, while Schalke 04 have the most difficult games as they face both Lyon & Benfica.

Manchester United are unbeaten this season in both domestic and European competition and lead Group C with ten points.  Rangers will need to beat Man Utd at Ibrox on Wednesday if they are going to have any chance securing second place ahead of Valencia.

In Group D Barcelona & FC Copenhagen are both in a very strong position and do not play each other in their two remaining fixtures.

Bayern Munich are one of only two teams to have won all four games and so have already qualified for the next round.  Roma look the most likely to join them ahead of CFR 1907 Cluj-Nopoca (great name) and Basle.

Chelsea are the other team with four wins out of four but it’s not clear whether Spartak Moscow or Marseille will finish second. I’m erring towards Spartak Moscow as they play Marseille at home tomorrow night, and then should easily beat MSK Zilinia in the last round of games on Wednesday 8th December, while Marseille entertain Chelsea in their last fixture.

It is not clear who will join Real Madrid in the next round from Group G.  AC Milan are currently one point ahead of Ajax and the final game on Wednesday 8th December between the two former Champions League winners will decide.  AC Milan will have home advantage, and if they beat Auxerre tomorrow, a draw will be enough against Ajax.  Ajax host Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid tomorrow evening in Amsterdam where they will be trying to keep the pressure on AC Milan with a win.

Finally, in Group H Shakhtar Donetsk look favourites to join Arsenal in the next round following their surprise 2-1 win at The Emirates where former Arsenal striker Eduardo scored the winning goal.  Both Arsenal & Shakhtar Donetsk could qualify if they win their games tomorrow evening.  Arsenal are away to Braga and Shakhtar Donetsk are away to pointless Partizan Belgrade.

Qualifying from the group stage if teams are level on points will be determined by the results of games between the teams in the tie (if tied, by goal difference and then by away goals counting double).

My Champions League tips for which two teams are going to go through from each group are as follows:

Group A: Inter Milan & Tottenham
Group B: Lyon & Benfica
Group C: Manchester United & Valencia
Group D:  Barcelona & FC Copenhagen
Group E: Bayern Munich & Roma
Group F: Chelsea & Spartak Moscow
Group G: Real Madrid & AC Milan
Group H: Arsenal & Shakhtar Donetsk

The final Champions League first round fixtures will take place on Tuesday 23rd & Wednesday 24th November and Tuesday 7th & Wednesday 8th December.

Chelsea may have their work cut out in tonight’s game against Spartak Moscow, although the Premier league champions won the away tie 2-0 the Russian’s always looked dangerous against an uncharacteristically slovenly performance from the Blues.

Former Celtic player Aiden McGeady is in the form of his life in Russia and caused all sorts of problems for the Chelsea defence at home, posing a constant threat whipping in eight crosses and setting up four chances during the match.

Spartak failed to convert any of the nine shots on target two weeks ago while Chelsea put away two of their three chances created.

Ironically John Terry was the only Chelsea player to make the top five of most successful passers during the last game with 90% accuracy in 31 passes compared to McGeady’s 95% from 40 passes.

Nicolas Anelka was the man in form for Chelsea on that occasion scoring the second gaol, his fourth so far in the campaign and remains the most dangerous of  Chelsea’s strikers going into tonight’s game.

Prediction:  Chelsea 2 Spartak 1

AC Milan v Real Madrid

A lot will depend on whether Gennaro Gattuso gets a game for Milan, or indeed how long he gets if he is picked, as he has proven to be the midfielder most likely to break up attacking play from the opposition in the brief 149 minutes that he has played in the Champions League this season.

He only managed 59 minutes in the reverse fixture at the Bernabeu before making way for a more attacking formation as Milan sought to get back into the game.

With Real Madrid possessing probably the most dangerous front players in the competition, AC Milan will be looking toward Gattuso to enforce the midfield.

Cristiano Ronaldo has edged his way back to sparkling form for Madrid in his last few matches in La Liga and the Champions League, following a particularly slow start to the season, scoring eleven goals and three assists in the last five games in both competitions!

What more needs to be said as we all know what the Portuguese player is capable of, and bearing in mind the further potency of the Real Madrid attack.

Prediction: AC Milan 0 Real Madrid 2

Castrol Performance looks at the early form of Real Madrid’s summer signing Angel Di Maria and AC Milan’s new boy and former Inter goal machine Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the run up to tonight’s match.

Angel Di Maria

Despite only playing 96 minutes in the competition the Argentinian winger has recorded the most accuracy from shots at goal in the competition so far, firing in nine shots in two games with seven finding the target and one finding the net.

Di Maria is currently showing a better shooting accuracy percentage wise than his team mate Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.

He scored the only goal of the game in Auxerre last month as a substitute to put Mourinho’s men in firm command of Group G.

While Di Maria can operate on either flank he is at his best on the right where he has the ability to cut inside and create havoc with opposing defenders, AC Milan should be particularly cautious when Di Maria gets his sights on the goal.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Ibrahimovic never appeared to be settled in his short time at Barcelona despite linking up well with Lionel Messi and scoring goals, I always thought that the Catalan club were more anxious to see the departure of Samuel Eto’o than to herald the arrival of Ibra.

Following his return to Italy with city rivals AC Milan, Ibrahamovic has scored all of the teams goals so far in the Champions League, whilst also creating the most chances for his team.

In the two games so far the Swedish striker scored three goals from five shots on goal all of which were on target. He has also worked hard for the team and has set up five goal scoring chances for his team mates.

If he continues in this vein of form, the Real Madrid defenders will have to be in their best form because every time Ibrahamovic has tried his luck this season, he has always managed to test the ‘keeper, finding the target with all five of his shots.

No mean feat for the giant striker whose team mates include Antonini, Ronaldinho, Seedorf and Robinho!

Oguchi Onyewu

AC Milan and USA centre back Oguchi Onyewu who is in the preliminary USA squad for the 2010 World Cup despite missing most of the season with a serious knee injury, has extended his contract with the Serie A club, but there is a strange twist.

In an age of overpaid footballers asking for yet more money to sign new contracts with their clubs, Onyewu has totally bucked the trend by agreeing to play for twelve months with no salary.

The 28-year-old was in his first season with the Italian club when he tore a knee tendon in October playing for the U.S. in a World Cup qualifier.

How reassuring then that the player feels that he owes the club who have paid his salary during his recuperation and has actually signed a contract to play for nothing for a year.

In a statement from the AC Milan website, it says:

“Onyewu asked for, and received, a one-year contract extension from Milan, from June 30, 2012 to June 30, 2013, during this extra year, Oguchi Onyewu, by his choice, much appreciated by the Rossoneri club, has asked not to receive any kind of salary. This is an exemplary gesture which deserves sincere congratulations.”

It is unclear whether Onyewu will play any part in the World Cup finals as he has only just recovered from the injury, too late to gain match fitness in the Serie A run in.

AC Milan finished third in Serie A this season.
