Yesterday Chelsea was rightfully crowned Premier League Champions after an emphatic display at Stamford Bridge. They only needed to win 1-0 but never stopped wanting to score. The difference between Carlo Ancelotti’s Premiership winning Chelsea team wanting to play attacking football and Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea team, who would score and then kill the game, was never clearer than at 7-0 up against Wigan Joe Cole’s eagerness to cross the ball for Ashley Cole to make it 8-0.
In winning the Premier League Chelsea set a new record of scoring 103 goals. They have played more attractive, attacking football, the like of which was apparently a requirement from the owner Roman Abramovich, who not only wants Chelsea to win the Champions League but play exciting football like Barcelona in the process.
With a double over their nearest rivals, Manchester United, three 7-0 victories and yesterday’s amazing 8-0 win it’s hard for anyone to say they aren’t worthy winners.
To cap a great season for Chelsea, Didier Drogba won the Golden Boot with a hat-trick yesterday.
On Saturday they will try to win the FA Cup & League double for the first time in their history. Standing in their way is another former manager, Avram Grant. In a season where they were knocked out of the Champions League by Jose Mourinho, wouldn’t it be ironic if Portsmouth were to win the FA Cup?
