Jermain Defoe has ended weeks of speculation over his future at Spurs, by joining Portsmouth in a deal that was confirmed with only minutes to spare before the midnight deadline.
Ironically, it seems that the move was prompted by a late move from Manchester City for Pompey striker Benjani Mwaruwari, however the Manchester club failed to register the transfer before the deadline and are to appeal to the Football league to allow the deal to stand. Portsmouth FC were under the impression that the Benjani deal was done but told BBC Five live that “Manchester City sent half the forms off and I’m not sure where it went from there.” Adding “I Know that Peter Storrie was told that the deal was done.”
While Storrie negotiates with the Premier league, Defoe arrives at Portsmouth feeling that the move will kickstart his career. ” I cant wait, I just want to get my boots on ” he said, while Redknapp added “He will be a great signing for us. He needs to play.”
