The BBC website suggest Dennis Wise will become the Newcastle Director of Football tomorrow after Newcastle confirm they have agreed a compensation package with Leeds United.
The story was thought to be nothing more than a rumour in the past few days, but when the story broke today everyone, including myself, were surprised at the appointment, especially the positon of director of football and not a coach or no.2 to Kevin Keegan.
Former director of football at Tottenham, David Pleat was surprised that Wise was offered the role at such a young age and told Radio Five Live:
“Wise has never been director of football before although he has been relatively successful coach at Millwall and was doing good work at Leeds.”
Gavin Peacock, ex Newcastle player & former team mate of Dennis wise at Chelsea turned BBC pundit is quoted as saying:
“I am surprised. I thought it would have been in a coaching capacity, but the director of football role surprises me. Maybe Kevin thinks he can start things and then maybe pass things on to him. I guess Kevin likes Wise and maybe has him lined up for that.”
But Kevin Keegan seemed very dispondent when asked to comment on the latest Newcastle signing at a press conference today.
“Obviously, there are going to be some moves at this club, but I think the chairman Chris Mort has really got to come out and say what that’s all about later this week,” said Keegan.
