Elimination from Champions League not the end of the world for Liverpool

“The club doesn’t die because you go out of the Champions League.” says Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher ahead of tonight’s crucial Champions League game against Debrecen, which win or lose could see the Reds eliminated from the competition.

Of course Carragher is perfectly right, but this is not something that you would have expected to hear the former England defender saying in previous years, when Liverpool have always talked up their chances.

It has been a strange season so far for Liverpool, who I firmly expected to shake of the disappointments of  missing out on trophies last year by demonstrating their might this season.

I must admit I am sick of reading about the absence and return of Gerrard and Torres in the Liverpool team, surely they have adequate cover in place, if not what has Benitez been doing with himself.

Carragher acknowledges the fact that Liverpool must simply focus on winning the game in Hungary and hope that other results go their way, but is already considering that failure in the Champions League would not be the end of the world and may even be a blessing.

He says that Europa League may offer the club a ’second chance’ in Europe and could ‘put a different gloss’ on Liverpool’s indifferent start to the season in which they have won only one game from the last ten.

“There are other things, like the FA Cup. There’s a long way to go. We haven’t had a great start to the season but it can certainly be turned around between now and the middle of May.” said a hopeful Carragher.

I think just like United in 2005 Liverpool will bounce back from this. It is unexpected but then thats football sometimes and is why we love & hate the game so much. I think Liverpool are badly missing Alonso as Lucas is the weak link for me. Benitez has not bought very well in backp midfielders or strikers in my opinion.
