Does the influx of foriegn players in to the Premier league really have a negative effect on the National team.
I have been watching football for over 40 years and in that time i cant recall a situation when an England manager has had 22 world class players to choose as a squad. At best we produce only a handfull of such players each generation.
In more recent times with the Premier league becoming more prosperous and able to, not only afford absurd transfer fees, but staggering wages to go with it, we have welcomed some of the best players in the world.
So how does that affect the quality of football being played? In my opinion the level of football being played in the Premier league is at its best ever in overall quality.
With the exception of Arsenal the top clubs all have a nucleus of the best english talent available. Those players have generally benefitted most from having the best players from around the world playing alongside them week in week out.
Players, whatever nationality, need to compete to get into thier club sides and the competetion has never been stronger. Gifted players like Joe Cole, had to go away and work at his game to get into the Chelsea team. Thats not unusual and can only make for a better all round player.
No. I believe the problem is not that we do not produce the players, but more that we do not do enough with the players that we have. There is a desperate need for the England team to break free from the past and look to the future. Of couse we would need a top quality coach!
