Fans want to buy Liverpool FC

Terry Lane - Thursday 31.01.08, 08:42am

A group of Liverpool supporters will launch a website today to see if there is enough interest to place a serious bid to buy-out the US businessmen George Gillett and Tom Hicks in an attempt to allow fans of the club to run Liverpool FC.

This is not as wild a scheme as it may seem at first. It is totally feasible and is not the madcap idea of a fanatic fan.

The Share Liverpool FC Group is the brainchild of three businessmen who wish to acquire ownership of the club. Football business lecturer and Liverpool supporter Rogan Taylor, former director of communications at the Premier League Phil French, and lawyer Kevin Jacquiss, who is an expert in launching co-operatives.

“The time is right to offer a different solution to the rising concerns that football fans have about the patterns of ownership developing at our major football clubs,” said Mr Taylor, who is director of the Football Industry Group at the University of Liverpool.

Full details of how the fans’ group hopes to buy the club will be revealed later today, although the BBC reports initial figures seem to suggest an investment by 100,000 supporters of £5,000 each.

The one person one vote model being proposed by the Share Liverpool FC Group is similar to that at Barcelona, with a member-share scheme aimed at raising £500million to purchase the club from the two Americans and build a new stadium.
