Chelsea have issued a statement tonight that the current boss of the Portugal national team, Luiz Felipe Scolari, will become the new Chelsea manager on 1 July.
The Chelsea statement went onto say:
“Felipe has great qualities. He is one of the world’s top coaches with a record of success at country and club level [...] He gets the best out of a talented squad of players and his ambitions and expectations match ours. He was the outstanding choice.
‘Big Phil’ Scolari who won the World Cup in 2002 with Brazil was reportedly courted by the English FA to become the England manager before the appointment of Steve McLaren.
Scolari is a high profile manager who’s record in football management speaks for itself. Like Fabio Capello I believe he is the kind of manager that players will learn to respect or be left out of the side, something that was possibly lacking last season under the management of Avram Grant.
The Chelsea statement went on to say:
“Out of respect for his current role and to ensure minimum disruption to this work there will be no further comment from Chelsea nor from Felipe about his new role until his employment with us commences.”
This announcement comes just hours after the Portugal defender Ricardo Carvalho said he wants to join Jose Mourinho at Inter Milan.
I believe the statement has been made at this time to stop any further unrest in the Chelsea camp. Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard looked certain to leave Chelsea, and I still believe they will both leave Stamford Bridge for Inter Milan. As for Chelsea’s Portugal players Ricardo Carvalho, Paulo Ferrera and Jose Boswinga, maybe Deco will be an obvious replacement for Frank Lampard.
