The Community Shield match took place at Wembley on Sunday, the traditional curtain raiser to the new season ended with the usual controversy that a Chelsea v Manchester United tends to throw up.
Manchester United with Nani in the role of tormentor, dominated the first half hour of the game and fittingly it was the Portugese player who gave United a deserved lead.
The second half saw Ancelloti bring on Boswinga as replacement for the hapless Ivanovic, who was having a torrid time against Nani and the tactical change settled the Chelsea side who controlled the second half of the game.
Carvalho scored the equaliser and put Chelsea in the driving seat, before Frank Lampard scored what looked to be the winning goal, under controversial circumstances. Ballack appeared to obstruct Evra with his elbow high although not appearing to contact the defenders face.
As Evra went down Chelsea broke and scored the goal. Ferguson was absolutely fuming at the decision to allow play to continue after Evra had gone down and could not control himself for the rest of the game.
Wayne Rooney, who by his standards was having a pretty quiet day scored the equaliser in the final minute of the game, forcing a penalty shoot out. Surprisingly, Cech was Chelsea’s hero in the shoot out, saving from Giggs and Evra but unable to stop Carrick’s effort. Chelsea players Drogba, Lampard, Ballack and Kalou giving Chelsea a 4-1 win on penalties.
Once again there is little to choose between these two sides and Chelsea just edged the game overall. Chelsea will need time to settle into the Ancelloti groove and United need to bed new players into a slightly different playing structure, but overall Chelsea and United will have laid down the marker for the coming season.

Hi John
First up I’d like to say I really like the your blog. You often have good orginal content which is what writing a blog is all about.
But the main reason I’m emailing you is to invite you to take part in our unique blogger challenge…
A couple of seasons ago we launched an online fantasy betting game. It started out just as a game for us to play against one another but it has now grown to around 1,000 users and this season for the first time we are trying to tell more people about it.
So we’re challenging you and other football bloggers to take part in a special league to find out who is the true footballing guru. Each month we’ll crown a champion on the site and an overall champ at the end of the season.
All you have to do is pick the results of each premiership fixture and you win points to the value of the odds for each correct selection. You will also be taking on our very own anonymous ‘thatch head’ football pundit! The league will be highlighted on the homepage and a link to your blog will be included on your profile.
Each league has a message board so that you can give each other some friendly words of encouragement!
The link to join the league is below, sign up only takes a couple of mins and then the ultimate respect of your football writing peers could be yours!
