Ghana & Guinea qualify from Group A

Terry Lane - Tuesday 29.01.08, 16:31pm

Last night the host nation Ghana and Guinea were the first two teams to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations 2008 quarter finals. Ghana beat Morocco 2-0 with a much more convincing display to qualify as winners of Group A.

Goals came from Chelsea’s Michael Essien and Portsmouth’s Sulley Muntari. Ghana now look up to the challenge of going all the way.

Guinea earnt a place in the quarter finals for the third successive time with a 1-1 draw with Namibia. Souleymane Youla scored for Guinea after 62 minutes, while Brian Brendell equalised to earn Namibia their only point in the tournament.

Tonight Ivory Coast will play Mali knowing they have already qualified while Nigeria need to win their final game in Group B against Benin to have any chance of progressing. Manager Bertie Vogts is under fire and will surely face the sack if they fail to qualify.
