Gullit & Lalas Leaves LA Galaxy

John Williams - Tuesday 12.08.08, 14:15pm

Former Chelsea and Newcastle manager Ruud Gullit has quit as coach of USA team LA Galaxy, citing personal reasons for his resignation.

Gullit says that his family is unable to settle in LA, and wants time out of football to ponder his next move.

Despite the presence of David Beckham in the team, LA Galaxy have failed to win any of their last seven games under Gullit and have dropped out of the play off spots in the Western Conference league.

Alexi Lalas, the man responsible for the signing of Beckham, has been sacked from the club following Gullits resignation. Club president Tim Leiweke saying “With Ruud moving on, we believe this is the right time to make more sweeping changes.”

The salary cap is thought to be one of the sticking points in attracting top players to the MLS and with most of Galaxy’s spend going to pay Beckham’s wages it leaves a limited budget to spend on other members of the squad.

Beckham was thought to be instrumental in attracting Gullit to LA Galaxy, so it will be interesting to know how he feels about the double departure.
