Italian Police shoot Lazio fan

Terry Lane - Tuesday 13.11.07, 11:26am

Lazio fan killed by police sparks riot26-year-old Gabriele Sandri, a fan of Serie A team, Lazio was accidentally shot and killed by a policeman while he was attempting to to break up a street fight between Juventus and Lazio on Sunday near a highway restaurant in the Tuscan city of Arezzo.

Gabriele Sandri was in a car with four other Lazio fans on their way to watch Lazio v Inter Milan.

The shooting was a “tragic error” according to Arezzo police chief Vincenzo Giacobbe. “Our officer intervened to ensure that skirmishes between two groups of people, who had not been identified as fans, did not degenerate with serious consequences for both parties,” Giacobbe added, according to Ansa news agency.

Yesterday a note from Gabriele Sandri’s father displayed this morning on the shutters of the clothes shop run by the Sandri family, in the Balduina area of Rome, stated “Yesterday a bastard killed my son, may he be cursed for ever.”

The shooting sparked off riots in four cities and forced the postponement of several matches. Police vehicles near Rome’s Olympic Stadium were set on fire as crowds clashed with police. Violence also was also reported in Milan and the southern city of Taranto.

This follows the heavy handed tactics of the Rome police witnessed at last season’s Champions League match between Roma and Manchester United.
