Newcastle and England midfielder Joey Barton has been ordered to stay in jail and refused bail by Liverpool magistrates for a second time on charges of assault and affray. Joey Barton (25) appeared in court via a videolink from Liverpool prison.
The assault charge has now been upgraded from common assault to an assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
In his previous court appearance on 28 December many were surprised when Joey Barton was refused bail and he spent the New Year in prison, missing two Premier League matches for Newcastle against Chelsea and former club Manchester City, in the process.
It has been alleged that Barton and a group of friends, including his brother Andrew Barton (19) were involved in two separate incidents in Liverpool city center in the early hours of the morning on December 27.

This latest arrest follows a BBC interview with Gabby Yorath on the Inside Sport where Joey Barton suggested that he is not a bad person and has simply received a bad press!

Are you blaming Mrs Logan for Barton’s current escapade?

Of course not. I was only pointing out that Joey Barton has continually said he is being victimsed and gets a bad press. When in truth he has been involved in a string of events that has created this bad boy image.
