A cracking game at Anfield saw Liverpool snatch the three points from an industrious Middlesbrough. The game produced some exciting football from both teams in an end to end battle throughout
The excellent finishing of Liverpool’s Fernando Torres being the only real difference between the teams. Sanli opened the scoring for Middlesbrough in the ninth minute as the Liverpool defence failed to pick him up from a Downing free kick.
Torres equalising in the 28th minute and then two minutes later slotting a superb shot past Schwarzer, to put the Reds 2-1 up.
Despite two disallowed efforts Middlesbrough couldn’t find an equaliser. Torres completed his first hat trick in the premier league , with another wonderful strike in the 61st minute.
Benitez took the workaholic Kuyt off with 20 minutes to go and replaced him with Rise to try and protect the lead. It didn’t pay off as Downing swooped in with seven minutes to go to give Middlesbrough some hope. Two minutes later and out of nothing ‘Brough’s Aliadiere was sent off for a raising his hand to Mascherano, the Liverpool player escaping unscathed even though he had clearly been first to put his hand in to Aliadiere’s face.
