Liverpool have confirmed that defender Martin Skrtel will join from Zenit St Peterburg on a four and a half year contract.
The 23 year old centre half becomes Liverpool’s most expensive defender in a deal believed to be around 6 million. Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez sees Skrtel as being a “good player for the future and also the present.”
The Slovakian international is seen as an ideal recruitment to put pressure on the likes of Carragher, Hypia and Agger for a starting place in the Liverpool team. Benitez remarked that the player will create a problem for his existing defenders and a good problem for him when deciding who to play in the future.
