Man Utd through to Champions League Final

Terry Lane - Wednesday 30.04.08, 08:02am

Manchester United beat Barcelona yesterday at Old Trafford to book their place in the UEFA Champions League final to be held in Moscow on 21st May.

Paul Scholes scored the only goal in the 14th minutes with a 25-yard shot that flew past Barcelona keeper Valdes and into the top right hand corner of the net.

Scholes missed Man Utd’s 1999 UEFA Champions League when they beat Bayern Munich 2-1 in Barcelona’s San Siro Stadium through suspension, so it was fitting last night that Sir Alex Ferguson broke with tradition to categorically state that Paul Scholes will be in the starting eleven for the UEFA Champions League.  But who will they face?

There has never been an all England UEFA European Cup (as it used to be called) or Champions League final, and tonight Chelsea play Liverpool at Stamford Bridge after a 1-1 draw in the first leg at Anfield, to book their place in this momentus occassion for English football.

Whoever qualifies tonight I believe the firm favourites will be Man Utd, though Rafa Benitez has proved his Liverpool team are a stronger side in the Champions League than they are in the Premiership.  Amazingly, this could be Liverpool’s third UEFA Champions League Final in the last four seasons.
