Mark Hughes Joins Manchester City

John Williams - Wednesday 04.06.08, 15:00pm

Mark Hughes has signed a three year deal to become the new manager of Manchester City following the recent sacking of Sven Goran Eriksson.

Hughes has enjoyed a successful three and a half years at Blackburn Rovers, with a limited budget and recently said that he was unsure whether he could fulfill his ambitions further at Ewood Park.

Blackburn chairman was full 0f praise for Hughes saying “He leaves the club in a strong position with three consecutive top ten finishes and an excellent squad of players. We wish him well. We would have liked him to stay on but he made it clear he wanted a fresh challenge.”

The arrival of Garry Cook as Manchester City executive chairman last month appeared to spell the end of Eriksson’s reign at Eastlands, and it would seem that Cook had already identified Hughes as the former England managers replacement.

“In our view Mark is the brightest young manager in the game and he was our number one target for the manager’s job. He made it clear to us from the moment we met that he shared our vision and ambition to make Manchester City one of the top sides in the country.”

Cook added that Hughes has already identified some of the players and backroom staff he would like to join him at City and recruitment of those personnel will begin immediately.

Hopefully Hughes will be given time to create the shared vision of Manchester City being a top club in England and Europe. And also that he can win over the City fans still angry at Erikssons dismissal.

Time will tell, but if City keep to their promise this could be start of something really big for Mark Hughes, he deserves the chance and I am sure he will relish it.
