Joe Cole missed much of last season through injury; and I believe along with injuries to John Terry and Petr Cech, was the reason Chelsea were beaten into second place to the Premiership title. Cole’s imagination, showboating and unpredictability was missed by Mourinho’s team as much as the fans, as Drogba stood alone in keeping Chelsea’s title defence alive.
So it is all the more surprising to see Joe Cole not featuring in Mourinho’s first choice eleven, this season. Has Mourinho seen a dip in Cole’s pre-season form or training? Or is it more to do with Shaun Wright-Phillips stepping up to the Stamford Bridge challenge and the flying introduction of Florent Malouda? Or is it that however impressive Cole might be, he doesn’t fit into the formation of the team as much as the aforementioned players and the likes of Salomon Kalu and Claudio Pizzaro?
Whatever the reason, Joe Cole now appears to have swapped bench warming duties with Wright-Phillips, as Chelsea top the table and go unbeaten in four!
How long will Joe Cole be happy with a big fat wage packet, that most other teams couldn’t afford, and a bit part playmaking role? Maybe he should go play for New England Revolution, where he could showboat for 80 minutes and score a hatful of fantastic goals in the last ten!
