Days after telling Jermain Defoe that he was excess to requirements at White Hart Lane, Spurs manager Juande Ramos included the striker in Saturday’s game against Sunderland, and made him Captain of the team.
The gesture of giving the captain’s armband to Defoe was seen by some to imply that this could be his last game with the club, while others saw it as a confidence booster for the player. Ramos’s remark that he had to give it to someone, was hardly confidence building.
Only last week Defoe was seen at Villa Park amid talk of a £10 million transfer to Martin O’Neil’s Aston Villa. So what has changed?
Today’s story in the Times quotes Defoe as saying that the day after he was told that he was up for sale, manager Ramos said that he didnt mean it, and that he (Defoe) was part of the clubs future.
Make of that what you will but my money says Defoe will be better served away from Tottenham Hotspur.
