How different things could have been for Michael Owen this season, after Rafael Benitez revealed that Liverpool were ready to bring the Kop favorite back to Anfield last summer.
Owen was apparently one from a list of ten strikers that Benitez had is eye on during the close season. Topping the list, one Fernando Torres, the then outstanding young Atletico Madrid striker, and unfortunately for Owen, Benitez got his man.
Benitez has said of Owen, that when he is fit, he is still one of the deadliest strikers in the world, but Torres was a better business proposition, a young player with something still to prove. He says of Owen,
“Close to the box he is really, really good. But Torres is a player with more pace and power. He can run behind the defenders and for me Michael must be close to the box.”
An inspired choice and what a let off for Liverpool.
