Portsmouth search on for Adams replacement

John Williams - Tuesday 10.02.09, 18:03pm

The search for a new manager at Portsmouth has been slightly overshadowed by the same proceedings at Chelsea, but with Guus Hiddink looking most likely to fill the vacancy at Stamford Bridge until the end of the season, it puts Avram Grant back in the frame at Pompey.

Grant has been mentioned among the favourites to take over from Tony Adams as well as an unlikely return to Chelsea, the team he left at the end of last season. Grant who took over at Chelsea following the surprise departure of fans favourite Jose Mourinho, when frankly Chelsea were struggling a bit under Mourinho, went on to finish second in the Premier League, Champions League and Carling Cup.

For Chelsea second was not good enough and Grant was either fired or resigned, but whatever, his achievements are probably better than many coaches in the Premier league. For me, that makes him worth giving a chance. The bookmakers think so too, making him favourite for the job, ahead of  Sven Goran Eriksson, who looks likely to be sacked from his job with Mexico international team if they don’t qualify for the World Cup.

I don’t like Eriksson too much and he is likely to ask too much money for the Portsmouth board anyway and in third place is the perennial favourite Alan Curbishley. Curbishley once did great things with Charlton- for years-but has had an up and down time in management elsewhere. He is very well thought of, but to me he is like a middle class ‘Arry Redknapp, don’t know why, but that’s what I always think.

Slaven Bilic I know little about but he is quoted at 5-1, and then comes the best of all, Terry Venables!

Not a name Pompey fans will want to hear let alone cheer! No, for my money Avram Grant is the man, he knows the club and is a personal friend of the owner, I believe the fans would welcome him and that has been backed up from what I have read on forums today. Above all, I am interested to know how good the much maligned Avram Grant really is.
