Despite some healthy competition, Portsmouth have signed French midfielder Lassana Diarra from Arsenal, for an undisclosed fee. The deal represents a real coup for Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp with the 22 year old player who possesses tremendous potential and needs to be playing on a regular basis.
Arsenal signed Diarra last summer after Chelsea made it clear to the player that they could not offer him first team football immediatley. While both Chelsea and Arsenal would have loved to keep the midfielder his ambition means that he needs to be playing.
Diarra has perhaps surprisingly admitted that he sees Pompey as somewhere that he can showcase his skills in the hope that a bigger club will eventually come in for him.
Redknapp believes, as I do that, Diarra is already one of the top midfielders in the Premiership, adding that “you dont play for France for the last nine or ten games unless youre top quality.”
Great news for Pompey.
