It is not very often these days that we get the opportunity to praise the referee, but I have to commend Howard Webb for his part in the Wigan v Manchester United game at the weekend.
Following an incident between Vidic of United and Rodallega of Wigan in the United box, Rodallega was left flat out holding his face, looking as though he had been pole axed, as play continued he got to his feet to remonstrate with the United defender. In doing so he angrily pushed the referee away before chasing after Vidic.
Howard Webb sprinted after Rodallega and I expected him to produce a red card, but instead he got himself in front of the Wigan striker and prevented him from contact with Vidic.
Amazingly Rodallega continued to argue and try to get past Webb, refusing to listen to the ref. This carried on for a minute or two before Webb told the Wigan captain to calm the player down, which seemed to have the right effect.
Rodallega was already on a yellow and gave Webb at least three chances to dismiss him, but despite not seeing the incident he saved the player from a sending off. Great refereeing in my book.
