Rangers stunned Sporting Lisbon last night scoring two away goals after a 0-0 draw at Ibrox, sending them through to a semi final meeting with Italian team Fiorentina.
Frenchman Jean-Claude Darcheville missed a great chance after only three minutes of play, but his shot was blocked by a defender. Sporting piled on the pressure and a Ramagnoli free kick was headed on to the post by Leidson. Vukcevic and Miguel Veloso also had good chances but Rangers defended well and kept the Portuguese at bay.
Sporting attacked Rangers with greater intensity in the second half, with the Scottish team allowing the Portuguese more possesion, but it was Rangers who took the lead on the hour. A long ball forward from Broadfoot found Darcheville, who headed wide to Davis. The cross from Davis came back to Darcheville who made no mistake in driving the ball home.
Sporting went desperately looking for an equaliser and McGregor saved well from Moutinho. Rangers substitute Cousin had a chance to increase the visitors lead, but it was Whittaker who scored in the 90th minute, dancing through the Lisbon defence to score a great individual goal, to make it 2-0 to Rangers.
