Ok, we all knew that it was coming, and Spurs defeat at home by Getafe in the UEFA cup provided the ideal oportunity. So Martin Jol is no longer in charge at White Hart Lane and the Tottenham board have once again turned to Sevilla head coach, Juande Ramos as the man they think can change the fortunes of the club.
Jol, who walks away with a four million pound pay off burning a hole in his pocket, had stood firm throughout the season so far, in the vain hope that his Tottenham team could again find the form that they have shown over the last two seasons. His recent, much publicised row with last seasons hero, Dimitar Berbatov couldnt have helped Jol’s own position, and it is reported that the Dutchman agreed to resign before last nights game.
It is also reported that the Sevilla coach has agreed to take charge of Tottenham, but not until the start of next season.
Ramos himself has enjoyed a chequered career in Spanish football, coaching ten different clubs in a managerial career spanning fifteen years. His most successful period since joining Sevilla two and a half seasons ago. Sevilla have won back to back UEFA cup titles for the last two seasons, and finished third in la Liga last season, behind Barcelona and Real Madrid.
So far this season, Sevilla have not found the form that they showed in the pre season Super cup against Real Madrid, when they won 5-3 in a fantastic game. They are currently in mid table, ten points behind leaders Madrid, though second to group leaders Arsenal in the Champions League.
Ramos, who was approached by Chelsea earlier in the season, shares the self belief that made Jose Mourinho so interesting, boasting at the time that he could make Chelsea into an invincible team. He does however have a passion for attacking football and the Spurs board will be looking to him to emulate the success of Arsene Wenger at north london rivals Arsenal.
