Tommy Burns dies of skin cancer

Terry Lane - Thursday 15.05.08, 11:22am

Tommy Burns, the former Celtic and Scotland football legend, had died of cancer.  He had been undergoing treatment for skin cancer since March 2006.  On 10 March 2008 Celtic confirmed Tommy Burns was undergoing further treatment for the disease.  Burns died on 15th May 2008.

Tommy Burns joined Celtic in 1973 and made his debut against Dundee United on 19th April 1975. He made 352 league appearances and scored 52 goals.  He also made 151 appearances for Kilmarnoc, scoring 16 goals; and surprisingly only made 8 appearances for Scotland between 1981 - 1988.  That says more about the quality of Scotland’s team in the 1980’s than it does about the quality of Tommy Burns as a player.

As well as being manager of Scotland, he also managed Celtic, Kilmarnock and Reading, and he also worked for Scotland under Bertie Vogts, at Newcastle under Kenny Dalglish and at Celtic under both Martin O’Neill and Gordon Strachan.

Tommy was a great man and player. I remember watching several celtic games when he played and you knew as soon as he got the ball the forwards were shortly going to be busy near the goalmouth!! My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. If you want you can leave messages, flower icons for free on the website at http://www.relativesremembered.com
