Transfer speculation for Chelsea

Terry Lane - Thursday 03.01.08, 10:09am

There has been plenty of transfer speculation surrounding Chelsea now the January transfer window is now officially open. On top of injuries to Frank Lampard and John Terry, among others, they will be losing some key players to the Africa Nations Cup through January. Michael Essien, Didier Drogba, Salomon Kalou and John Obi Mikel will all be missed.

It has been variously reported that Chelsea have agreed an £8.5m deal with Lokomotiv Moscow for Serbia international defender Branislav Ivanovic and various amounts and deals have been mentioned to take the Tottenham forward Dimitar Berbatov to Stamford Bridge.

Yesterday Bolton striker Nicolas Anelka threw a cat among the pigeons as he was quoted in a French magazine stating he was keen on a move to Chelsea and that the two teams had already agreed the move!

In December Chelsea were also linked with Barcelona’s Ronaldinho, though it seems more likely that he will choose a move to AC Milan.

The Daily Mirror today also reports that Chelsea are set to make a double swoop for Sevilla defender Daniel Alves and Valencia striker David Villa, at a cost of £45m.

I cannot see the point in Chelsea buying a straight replacement for Didier Drogba in Dimitar Berbatov or Nicolas Anelka unless Drogba is already planning a move away from Stamford Bridge in the summer, as these players are too similar to play together, and I cannot see any of them being happy to rotate.

David Villa would be a great addition to the team and be a possible strike partner for Drogba, Berbatov or Anelka.
