When are power cuts a good thing?

Iain W - Wednesday 21.11.07, 22:17pm

When you don’t have to sit through the first half of the England v Croatia debacle, whats the worst thing of power cut ending? It coming back on for the second half! I’d a great evening lined up, a few beers, some friends, some family, a fantastic home made pizza or two and I thought it had all been ruined by some workman’s errant power tool, how little did I know what the true ruination of the night would be, the ineptitude of McClaren. I’ve never been a fan of him, but I was determined to not do him the disservice of believing that he could not achieve a draw against Croatia, I didn’t even comprehend that it would turn out to be a wet dream for all the Scotland fans aggrieved not to have qualified from a group considerably tougher than England’s.

I’m guessing, no, hoping that as we come up to a mere half hour after the final whistle that McClaren has fallen on his sword. Maybe along with everything he’s been charged with, it’s not been best looked after, and a rusty sword would be befitting. I’d thought a day or two before the game about blogging that I hoped that he’d be magnimous in qualification, appreciate that it was a very close thing, and lessons have to be learnt and most importantly are being. I didn’t hold much hope on him being contrite, but I wasn’t thinking the qualification wasn’t in as much doubt.

I’ll leave others to pick over the bones, Carson should never had been there, James was the ideal, in form, and totally expendable. As for Alan Green saying he never thought Beckham has ever been world class, maybe he’s preparing for a move to talksport where presenters seem to be obtuse as if their lives depend on it.

Carson/Robinson was a tough choice, but you’re probably right about James. But can you imagine how the press would have described the return of “Calamity” James? Was McClaren too worried about the press? Were the FA? Does it explain why Bowyer – one of the premiership’s top scorers this season – can’t even get in the squad?

Agree completely about Alan Green. I’ve flamed him on the BBC Blogs before and I might do so again after last night (I listened to some of the first half on the radio). I also dislike Motson, but at least Lawrenson deflates him as necessary.
