Fabio Capello has refused to be drawn on whether he will offer David Beckham the chance to earn his 100th cap against Switzerland in the England friendly international at Wembley on 6th February.
It will be Fabio Capello’s debut as the new England manager and I believe he will use this opportunity to thank David Beckham for his part in helping Capello lead Real Madrid to the La Liga championship last season before he left to play for L.A. Galaxy, and at the same time not be rushed into a decision on who is to be his England captain in the longer term.
Therefore, I believe he will make Beckham captain for this special ocassion and then show him the door, as I believe Capello will see no future in anyone over 30, if he is to build a team for the next World Cup.
I think it works to Capello’s advantage in two ways.
I don’t know of any England fans that would deny David Beckham has played an integral role for the England team over the past few years; and who can forget the last minute free kick against Greece?
Capello could win over the England supporters with this gesture, as long as Beckham doesn’t have a mare. At the same time, I don’t think Fabio Capello is ready to make a decision on who is to be England captain in the long term. There has been much speculation over whether John Terry will continue as England captain, I think he will, but he is currently injured and may therefore be unavailable, anyway.
What odds on Beckham to be captain and score the winning goal?
